Good morning! We’re really digging into the roads of Mill Valley this week. First pavement, now traffic signals, it couldn’t get more hyperlocal than that.

🌤️ Today's weather: Sunny and mild, high near 69°F. Partly cloudy overnight with a low around 50°F. (Source: National Weather Service)

Today's newsletter: Mill Valley's new smart signals are cutting midday commutes, but that 101 on ramp is making your evening worse. Plus, the school board's phone pouch vote and your Thursday guide. This Briefing is about 732 words, a 3-minute read.

The smart signals are working. The 101 ramp isn't helping.

What happened: The city activated an adaptive traffic signal system on East Blithedale Avenue last November, deploying software that adjusts signal timing in real time based on actual traffic demand. The City Council received the first performance evaluation Monday night.

Where it's working: During midday hours, travel times on Blithedale dropped 13.6 percent eastbound and 11.6 percent westbound compared to before the system went live. Weekend travel times fell around 8 percent in both directions. For anyone who drives Blithedale between 11am and 3pm, or on a Saturday, the system is doing what it was built to do.
