Mill Valley schools switch lunch vendors after student-inclusive selection process
Mill Valley public elementary and middle schools will get a new lunch provider this fall after the board voted unanimously Thursday to award a food services contract to Revolution Foods, a Commerce-based company that supplies meals to more than 145 school districts across California.
What's happening: The district has used LunchMaster, a San Carlos company operating under Nob Hill Catering, since the 2024-25 school year. The Briefing did not reach LunchMaster before publication. The switch follows a second competitive bidding process in three years.
Per-meal prices will rise under the new contract. A school lunch will cost $4.02 next year, up from $3.75 when the district first contracted with LunchMaster in 2024. Breakfast rises to $2.55 from $2.35 over the same period. A Briefing review of district contracts and the vendor's fee proposal puts the estimated annual cost at roughly $426,000, up from $380,000 under the prior vendor.
Why it matters: According to discussion at Thursday's board meeting, better school food ranked among the top requests from students during recent board campaigns. The selection process included a blind taste test with students, staff and a board member. Sixth graders participated specifically because they will be eating the meals throughout the contract period.
