Mill Valley's road tax heads to November ballot

What's happening: The City Council voted 5-0 Monday to endorse renewal of the Municipal Services Tax and advance it toward the November 3 ballot, setting up the fifth public vote on the 39-year-old parcel levy that funds road repair and vegetation management across the city.

The tax currently runs $303 per parcel per year and brought in just under $2 million last fiscal year, according to city budget records. Under the renewal proposal, it would continue for 10 years at the same rate with a 2% annual escalator.

City staff and Municipal Services Tax Study Committee members gathered at City Hall after the council voted unanimously Monday to place the tax renewal on the November ballot. (MVB, May 18)

The background: The MST has never failed at the ballot. Voters approved it in 1987, 1997, 2006 and 2016, the last time with 77% support. Each renewal requires a two-thirds supermajority under California law.
