What's happening: The Marin Wildfire Prevention Authority board approved a 170-acre fuel break above Tamalpais-Homestead Valley on Thursday, clearing crews to start cutting invasive brush, hazard trees and other flammable vegetation as soon as this fall.

Why it matters: About 155 of the 170 acres sit inside a designated high wildfire hazard severity zone, and treatment will reach within 200 feet of homes along steep hillside communities, according to the staff report. The project's environmental filing spells out why that geography worries fire officials: any wildfire there "would rapidly escalate," it says, and crews would have limited road access to respond.
