Good morning and happy Monday! We spent a lot of time talking about roads and traffic last week. I have a feeling it will be schools and education this week.

🌤️ Today's weather: Mostly sunny skies with a high near 77. Winds pick up from the south southwest around 6 mph in the afternoon before calming overnight. Lows drop to around 52. (Source: National Weather Service)

Today's newsletter: A parking lot on Shoreline Highway closes Thursday as Marin's flood emergency enters its fifth month, your trash bill this summer depends on which side of the city line you live on, a new playground is coming to Edna Maguire, and the civic calendar ahead. This Briefing is about 1,030 words, a 4-minute read.

Manzanita lot closes Thursday as Marin's flood emergency enters its fifth month

The lower half of the Manzanita Park and Ride lot in unincorporated Mill Valley will close from May 14 through May 21. Caltrans is also closing shoulder parking on Shoreline Highway during the same period. Forecasted high tides are expected primarily at night.

The closure runs 24 hours a day to prevent overnight parking and protect motorists, says Caltrans. Changeable message signs in the lot will notify drivers. For real-time conditions, visit Caltrans QuickMap at quickmap.dot.ca.gov.

The bigger picture: The closure comes four months into an active flood emergency. Marin County has been under a local emergency declaration since January 13, when king tides combined with severe storms caused levee failures and flooded homes in Santa Venetia. The Board of Supervisors extended that declaration at their May 5 meeting through July 18.
