What happened: Mill Valley council pay - unchanged since 2007 - is on track to rise from $350 to $650 a month, after the City Council introduced the ordinance at Tuesday’s council meeting. It's the ordinance's first formal reading; a second is still required before adoption.
The $650 figure isn't new and the council settled on it back in June, after months of debate not just over the number, but over who the raise is actually meant to help.
The debate: The number on the table changed twice since March. On March 16, the council voted 3-2 to introduce an ordinance setting compensation at $950 a month - the state-law maximum for a city Mill Valley's size, per Government Code Section 36516 - according to a March 2 staff report and that meeting's action minutes. Mayor Max Perrey, Vice Mayor Caroline Joachim and Councilmember Katherine Jones voted yes; Councilmembers Urban Carmel and Stephen Burke voted no.
