A TUHSD trustee threatened to resign in a way that would deadlock the board
A sitting Tamalpais Union High School District trustee told Superintendent Courtney Goode in April that they might resign, but would time it to prevent the board from appointing a replacement, board president Cynthia Roenisch disclosed in open session on Tuesday.
What happened: The threat, as Roenisch described it, was to leave the board with an even number of trustees. Under California Education Code, a board needs a majority vote to appoint a provisional replacement when a seat opens. Four trustees cannot produce a majority. The seat would remain vacant until the next election.
The district's attorney advised that engineering such an outcome would violate the duties of an elected official. Roenisch included the item on the agenda on legal counsel's advice.
"Should a board member decide that they will not fulfill their obligations as an elected trustee, they should step down immediately," Roenisch said. "To attempt to thwart that is a failure in duties of an elected official."
